Maternity Leave is a period of leave granted to female employees before and after childbirth. It allows mothers time to recover and care for their newborn while protecting their job security. The duration and benefits of maternity leave vary by country and company policies, often including paid or unpaid leave, depending on labor laws and employment contracts.

Maternity Leave Eligibility and Entitlement in Singapore
As a working mother, you may be eligible for either 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) or 12 weeks of maternity leave, depending on your child’s citizenship status and other qualifying conditions.
You qualify for 16 weeks of paid maternity leave under the Child Development Co-Savings Act if you meet the following criteria:
✅ Your child is a Singapore citizen.
✅ You have worked for your employer for at least 3 continuous months before your child’s birth (for employees).
✅ If self-employed, you have been engaged in your work for at least 3 continuous months and experienced a loss of income during your maternity leave.
✅ You have notified your employer at least 1 week in advance before starting maternity leave and informed them as soon as possible after delivery. Failure to do so may result in receiving only half of the payment, unless a valid reason is provided.
Employers are responsible for paying maternity leave wages and can claim reimbursement from the Government under the GPML scheme, based on the birth order of the child:
For the first and second child, the employer will pay for the first 8 weeks of maternity leave at the employee’s gross salary. The government will reimburse the remaining 8 weeks, capped at $10,000 per 4 weeks, with a total reimbursement limit of $20,000.
For the third and subsequent children, the government will cover the entire 16 weeks of maternity leave, with a reimbursement cap of $10,000 per 4 weeks, totaling $40,000.
Employees should submit maternity leave applications directly to their employers.
Employers can claim reimbursement through the Government-Paid Leave (GPL) Portal.
Self-employed individuals can also submit claims via the GPL Portal.
Employers must notify MOM if a migrant worker is found to be pregnant.
Mothers may also choose to transfer up to 4 weeks of their maternity leave to their spouse under the Shared Parental Leave scheme.
